sporting documentaries 2023

There are new sporting documentaries and series dropping just about every week on streaming services and just to be clear, we’re not complaining. But it’s certainly a challenge keeping track.

So on that note, we’re doing the hard work for you — compiling a running list of everything that has dropped, or is coming.

Sporting documentaries released in 2023

Netflix has once again been the leading producer of sports-related content worth a watch, with Prime Video also getting involved frequently. The other content locations include, of course, Disney+ and Stan Sport.

So let’s get into our full list of 2023 sporting documentaries, starting with what Netflix has.

Sporting documentaries on Netflix

Netflix is the king of sporting documentaries at the moment, thanks — for the most part — to the hugely successful Formula One: Drive To Survive series.

Break Point 2: Part 2 of the tennis docuseries. Coming June 2023.

Untitled FIFA World Cup series: A docuseries following the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Coming winter 2023.

Quarterback: Netflix’s foray into NFL kicks off with a docuseries following three of the league’s quarterbacks — including the iconic Patrick Mahomes.

At Home with the Furys: An inside look into the life of boxing heavyweight Tyson Fury and his chaotic family. Coming 2023.

Sunderland ‘Til I Die 3: The third instalment in one of Netflix’s first docuseries, following the drama and football of Sunderland Football Club. Coming 2023.

Tour De France: Unchained: A docu-series charting the highs and lows of the 2022 Tour de France.

Untitled David Beckham series: Coming late 2023.

McGregor Forever: It’s a four-parter, featuring roughly three hours, 20 minutes worth of almost entirely unseen Conor McGregor footage and narration. You can go straight to Episode 1 here.

Untold: Volume 3: The third season of Netflix’s sports documentary series, in which each episode follows a new, untold sports story from the 2007 NBA betting scandal to the 1983 America’s Cup.

Six Nations: A behind-the-scenes look, as one of rugby’s most prestigious international tournaments unfolds in the northern hemisphere. It’ll feature six major nations that are all involved with the World Cup, so the Six Nations in early 2023 bared even more meaning than usual.

Ultimate Fighter: The Ultimate Fighter is one of ESPN’s most influential broadcasts, having been instrumental in growing the popularity of the sport of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) through the 2000s. This one is particularly spicy; Conor McGregor takes on the role as a coach on the newest season of the reality series.

Untitled Lewis Hamilton documentary: If you’ve already binge-watched every season of Netflix’s Drive to Survive and still haven’t quite quenched your F1 thirst, you’re in luck because Apple TV+ is working on its own Lewis Hamilton documentary. He’s an enigmatic, interesting and unique individual, not to mention one of the best Formula 1 drivers of all time — so this should be must-watch.
