There’s not much football downtime in a calendar year, so you’re just going to have to carve out time for the football documentaries that are complementing all the action on the pitch.
From Ryan Reynolds’ redevelopment of the famous Wrexham Football Club, to a deep dive into what makes Australia’s Matildas tick, there is no shortage of content.
So without further ado, let’s look at all of the exciting football documentaries both released already and also in the works right now.
Football documentaries released
Matildas: The World At Our Feet
Released April 26 exclusively on Disney+, Matildas: The World at Our Feet is a six-part docu-series following players such as Sam Kerr and Ellie Carpenter as they worked towards their very first World Cup on home soil.
We now know what happened in the major tournament down under. That doesn’t mean we can reflect on the group’s preparation.
“It’s been an incredible experience sharing our journeys with Disney+, both on the field and off, and I can’t wait for the world to see our true love, dedication and passion for the game and our country,” Sam Kerr said of the project.
That Peter Crouch film
The documentary is set to follow not only Crouch’s incredibly successful football career, but also insights into his initial struggle to find a breakthrough club, plus his personal life.
Released June 22, you can find it here on Prime Video.
Kalvin Phillips: The Road To City
‘Kalvin Phillips: The Road to City’ tells the incredible story of one of England’s most promising footballers, who has gone from promoting a historic club to the top-tier, to now being a part of the world’s greatest football team.
Released on July 19 and available on Prime Video.
We Are Newcastle United
Prime Video’s four-part docu-series will be diving into the massive deals and decisions that led to Newcastle United qualifying for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 20 years.
Released on August 11.
Football documentaries coming soon
Sunderland ‘Til I Die 3
The third and final season of Sunderland Til I Die will follow the 2021-22 football season as the team aims to reach promotion out of League One. The final season will feature just two episodes as the Black Cats make their way out of the league.
“This time we are purely focussing on the play-off win from last season,” production company Fulwell 73’s Leo Pearlman said of the final instalment of the football documentaries’ series.
“There will be two episodes that look at the incredible finale to the season with the play-off semi-finals and the play- off win against Wycombe at Wembley.
“We are ending Sunderland Till I Die on a high.”
A release date for season 3 is yet to be announced.
Welcome To Wrexham, S2
After its roaring success last year, Wrexham Football Club owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney confirmed that a second season will be coming soon.
Season one followed Wrexham’s 2021/22 season which means the upcoming season of the docu-series should dive into all of the madness of this season — including the club’s impressive run in the FA Cup.
We don’t have a release date for season 2 yet, but considering season 1 dropped last August, we can assume this one will follow a similar timeline.
Untitled World Cup Doco
The untitled FIFA World Cup doco slated for release later this year will give unprecedented access to the 32 teams involved in the 2022 World Cup in an intimate format never seen before.
The series is produced by Fulwell 73, in partnership with FIFA+, and will feature exclusive, behind-the-scenes footage from every team involved in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
It remains unclear if the doco will stick to the football itself, or will dive into the political chaos that shrouded the tournament, but either way, we can expect lots of Lionel Messi content.
A release date for the project is yet to be announced.
Beckham
It feels like it was a million years in the making. The doco follows his life and career; his time in football, as well as his family life with former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham.
“I’m excited to confirm that I am partnering with Netflix on a documentary series about my life and career,” Beckham said last year.
“David’s family are all massive archivers. They’ve been proudly documenting his career since he was a boy and have kept all the old local newspaper cuttings, school records, and team photos throughout the years,” a source close to the project said.
It is now available on Netflix and it’s fabulous.
Stand or Fall
Due for release later this year, Stand or Fall will follow Brighton & Hove Albion’s “climb from the bottom of professional football all the way back to the top-tier.”
The series follows the story from the brink of collapse in 1996/97 right through to its more recent successes.
“The Brighton story has its highs and lows, heroes and villains, and every facet will be reflected – light and shade being essential to a proper narrative. But we have found the story to be an intensely human one. We have gone for the stories behind the stories, to expose the beating heart of a unique club – above all to tell a story with warmth and passion,” said producer Matthew Lorenzo.
“We hope our film will appeal to football fans everywhere, and to a much wider audience – one that will relate to a great tale, where human endeavour and belief has led to a remarkable rise and a very human triumph against all odds.”
We will be sure to update this list as more football documentaries are announced.
