The hype certainly appears to be real.
Surfer Fraser Dovell has done it again, unleashing another conversation-starting documentary; Corners of the Earth Kamchatka.
It follows his original, A Corner of the Earth (2019); once again teaming up with filmmaker Spencer Frost, aptly named for this trip. Joining Frost and Dovell is surfer Letty Mortenson and filmmaker Guy Williment.
What’s Corners of the Earth Kamchatka about?
The crew document their ridiculous mission to Kamchatka in the far east of Russia, searching for new waves along the frozen, unexplored coastline.
Going with the tried and true method of most surfing doccos, which continues to work, a group of guys wanted to find new waves.
Given the success of Icelandic surf expedition Under An Arctic Sky, it’s a pretty safe bet this one rips too.
How did these guys go to Russia?
That’s the million dollar question.
Stab did a big write up here, but essentially the group had been planning the trip for years and the timing became very touch and go; Russia declared war on Ukraine the day they were boarding their flights to Moscow. So they took the punt and I spose we’ll have to actually see Corners of the Earth for more on that.
Where are the Australian screenings?
If you want to see it any time soon, don’t fire up Netflix cos you’ll have to work harder for this. There are special screenings in selected theatres and cinemas around Australia, starting in February, and some of them are already sold out.
Find out here what’s on offer; there are nine events locked in for NSW (but some of them are now fully booked), two in Queensland, two in Western Australia, one in Victoria (Geelong) and one in Tassie (Hobart).
Can you stream Corners of the Earth?
At some point, you’d imagine so. But at this stage, it’s exclusively being played in special screenings for those keen to get an earlier glimpse.
But Fraser Dovell’s original A Corner of the Earth is on Prime video here.
There’s also a Corners of the Earth book if that’s your thing
Impress home visitors with a coffee table book that screams ‘pick me up’? There’s a 310-page hard cover that documents the trip a different way – they had professional photographers along for the ride – and there’s more info on that here.
