‘Already in advanced talks’: Tszyu is eyeballing the world’s best boxer

terence crawford next fight news: Tim Tszyu, Canelo Alvarez?

Terence Crawford has more trouble finding opponents than he does out-boxing them.

The undefeated 36-year-old, regarded as the best pound-for-pound boxer on the planet out-classed world class fighter Errol Spence in mid-2023 and there’s been little more than innuendo as to who might be next up for ‘Bud’.

Aussies that only loosely follow boxing might remember the name; he comfortably took care of Jeff Horn in 2018, in Vegas, when the Aussie was flying high after his win over legend Manny Pacquiao.

Crawford hasn’t had more than one fight in a calendar year since 2019, a reflection of the difficulty it is to find worthy opponents.

So as the pride of Nebraska widens his search, a name that’s emerged is none other than – the now US-based – Tim Tszyu. The Sydney product has been climbing the ranks at a faster rate than he’s managed to gain respect in the fighting capital, but that may well change very, very soon.

According to a Fox Sports Australia report, Tszyu could be just one win away from setting up a show of epic proportions with Crawford. The Aussie had a huge showdown locked in with highly respected 35-year-old Keith Thurman on March 30, but the opponent has been changed on just 12 days notice.

Tszyu now has the chance to double his strap count, taking on The Towering Inferno Sebastian Fundora — his WBO super welterweight title and the vacant WBC super welterweight belt are both up for grabs. It’s a tricky task, taking on a southpaw opponent more than 20cms taller than Tszyu on such short notice.

In fact, a new report suggests that Crawford started engaging with the Aussie before he’d even taken on – and taken down – Brian Mendoza down under last year.

“There have been talks between us,” he told the publisher.

“I give Crawford all respect. He’ll fight anyone.

“But there’s a lot going on,” he said regarding possible next-up opponents and options.

“That’s why this upcoming fight means so much … I win and the possibilities are endless.”

Terence Crawford’s next fight

Terence Crawford vs. ??? | Details not confirmed

Terence Crawford's next fight
Terence Crawford is boxing’s pound-for-pound king.

Tszyu, who also has the scalp of Horn on his resume, like Crawford, will defend his WBO super welterweight championship against Fundora. And, also according to the report, WBO president Paco Valcarcel also hinted at a collision course between Crawford and Tszyu.

‘Bud’ would have to move up in weight, from welterweight (147 pounds) to 154lbs.

“You are the first person I’ve talked to about the possibility of Crawford moving to 154.”

“I’m not authorised to tell (more, but) he love to fight at 154.

With the 24-0 Aussie based in the combat sports capital of the world, Las Vegas these days, it’s fair to speculate that a Crawford-Tszyu super-fight would happen in the Nevada capital.

Terence Crawford currently boasts an undefeated 40-0 record with 31 KOs.

He has held the IBF welterweight title since 2017, the WBC title since 2019 and the WBA title for the past year.

Crawford has been ‘secretly pursuing’ Tszyu for at least five months

The latest is that the rising Sydney star has been on Crawford’s radar since last year, even before Tszyu out-boxed the ridiculously tough Brian Mendoza.

If Tszyu is able to beat Fundora, Crawford has plans to use his status as WBO welterweight champ to move up a division (to Tszyu’s weight) as a mandatory challenger.

Tim Tszyu's next fight
Tim Tszyu’s last fight was a unanimous win over the ultra tough Brian Mendoza.

Terence Crawford has also been linked to Canelo Alvarez, who’s the undisputed king at Super middleweight (168 pounds), but given the weight differences, that one remains a long shot. Alvarez most recently outclassed Jermell Charlo, who’s been Tszyu’s number one focus for multiple years — but the American continues to dodge him.

The other names for Crawford have included Charlo, Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez.

But let’s see what happens between Tszyu and Fundora.

How to watch Terence Crawford’s next fight

Main Event, via either Foxtel or Kayo

When something is confirmed, you can bet Aussie broadcaster Main Event – which can be streamed pay-per-view on Kayo – will be all over it.

Main Event’s also available through Foxtel, of course.

Terence Crawford's next fight, Jeff Horn
Terence Crawford stopped Jeff Horn in the pair’s 2018 bout, a ninth round TKO.

Who did Terence Crawford fight in his last bout?

Crawford and Errol Spence’s mega-fight was billed as the bout to decide the best pound-for-pound on the planet; they were both undefeated heading in.

New Yorker Spence, 33, was 28-0, but suffered a ninth round TKO at the hands of Crawford. Spence showed great character to hang in for as long as he did; it was a pure masterclass from the Nebraska native.

It was the seventh time that Crawford defended his WBO welterweight title, but the victory helped him become undisputed in the division, claiming the Spence’s WBA (Super), WBC and IBF belts.

Spence has also been linked to Tszyu and that’s also something to keep an eye on.
