LIV Golf landed its biggest coup to date earlier this week with the signature of world number two Cameron Smith. Like those before him, his thinly-veiled justifications left many longing for someone to finally ditch the spin and tell us how it really is.
OPINION:
Cameron Cameron Cameron, you did it, you signed with LIV. They offered you a bucket load of cash and you took it. And fair enough, that is your prerogative, but please, just tell us how it really is.
In your first LIV presser, you mentioned that you haven’t been home in three years – that sucks. Was that the PGA Tour’s fault? Or perhaps a well-known global pandemic?
And yes, you have missed the weddings of those nearest and dearest to you – that is unfortunate. But Cameron, the last time I checked you had the freedom to pick and choose your schedule on the PGA tour. So whose fault is that?
Speaking of freedoms, I thought any announcement on your playing future was to come directly from you. It seems you were gracious enough to allow LIV the limelight on that one.
Perhaps that grace may be returned if one of the 14 LIV events clash with another wedding. Surely they will let you skip a week and return home? It’s not like you’re locked in to play, right? Oh, wait…
Embed from Getty ImagesLook, none of us average joes can really blame you for taking the cash. Who wouldn’t take the extra coin on offer from a rival company with the promise of working less and zero repercussions for poor performance?
And hell, if it means we’ll see more of you on Aussie shores, I’m down for that. I just hope it’s the same Cameron Smith that stormed home to win the Open Championship.
And by more, I’m only referencing the rumoured Australian LIV event on the horizon, because before COVID you were still able to return home and compete in the Australian Open and PGA despite your PGA Tour shackles.
So forgive me for failing to perceive how this change of tour drastically improves your quality of life besides a hefty pay rise.
Please, Cameron, give it to us straight, we can take it.
