‘The dying quail goes through’: Aussie’s versatility wows the NFL

Take a bow, Mitch Wishnowsky.

The Aussie punter picked up a new job during his side’s win in uptown Charlotte.

San Fransisco’s first-choice kicker Robbie Gould suffered a knee injury, having to make a tackle on a kickoff being returned by the Panthers special teams.

Gould actually made two tackles during the 49ers’ 37-15 win at Bank of America Stadium. Risking the health of a team’s kicker is not recommended; franchises don’t suit up a backup specialist.

Gould was ruled out, so up stepped the Aussie. Wishnowsky is San Fran’s punter… a fairly different role in the NFL.

His first attempt was a massive shank to the left, but with another opportunity he made the necessary adjustments.

Thankfully for the 49ers and Wishnowsky, it wasn’t an overly pivotal moment in their clash with Carolina; it was late in the match and their third win of the season had already been secured.

Along with his punting, Wishnowsky has previously impressed by showing off his physicality and tackling skills.

So here’s another feat to add to his impressive skillset. Like Seattle punter and fellow Aussie Michael Dickson, he’s certainly making a name for himself in the states.
