England scores more day 1 runs than any test team, ever

‘Bazball’ is getting out of hand.

England has racked up a remarkable day one total of 4/506 in its first test against Pakistan, the most ever on the first day of a test match.

Even more incredibly, the total came in just 75 overs, with bad light ending action 15 overs short of a full day.

But the England batters had caused maximum carnage to what was an already inexperienced Pakistani bowling attack.

Pakistan’s four front-line bowlers boasted a combined 13 tests worth of experience prior to the match, with all 13 belonging to 19-year-old Naseem Shah.

The day began ominously for Pakistan, with Zak Crawley hitting 14 runs off the first over of the match, and it only got crazier from there, with England scoring 174 in the first session of the match – the most ever in a test match.

The records didn’t stop falling there, though – with England shattering plenty more on their way to the incredible total of 4/506.

Here’s a wrap of the astonishing achievements that the Poms racked up:

4/506 – The most runs a team has scored on the first day of a test match. It’s also the fifth-most runs on any day of test cricket – if bad light hadn’t interfered, the all-time record would have been in danger!

174 – England’s first-session total, the highest ever in the opening session of a test.

233 – The opening partnership between Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley. It’s the fastest double-century opening stand in test history, and the third-fastest for any wicket.

86 balls – The time it took Zak Crawley to bring up his century – the fastest ever by an England opener.

80 balls – The time it took for Harry Brook to bring up his century – the third-fastest in England’s history.

4 centuries – The first time four players from the same team have scored a century on the opening day of a test. Five is the record for a test innings – could England equal or break this record on day two?

3 sub-100 ball tons – Brook (80), Crawley (86) and Ollie Pope (90) all brought up three figures in less than a run-a-ball, the first time three players from the same team have done so in a test innings.

Six fours in an over – Harry Brook became the fifth-ever batter to do this in a test match, off debutant Saud Shakeel.

Day 2 will resume at 4:00 pm AEDT on Friday, with England looking to cause more chaos.
