Alexander ‘the great’ Volkanovski is well on his way to becoming Alexander ‘the GOAT’. His next title defence is now locked in, but it’s more so legacy on the line this time.
For Aussie UFC star Alexander ‘the great’ Volkanovski, his upcoming fight with rival Max Holloway is the chance to cement his GOAT legacy.
Having already defeated Holloway twice, a third straight win for Volkanovski will make him the greatest featherweight ever.
Volkanovski and Holloway will fight in the co-main event at UFC 276 in July, which will be headlined by Israel Adesanya defending his middleweight title against Jared Cannonier.
Should Volkanovski defend his belt, he will earn the No. 1 pound-for-pound ranking – making him the best fighter in the UFC.
UFC president Dana White recently suggested the champ had been presented with the opportunity to create ‘a career defining moment’ in his trilogy showdown with Holloway.
“It’s not only where I separate myself from every other fighter in the division, but where I earn the pound-for-pound No. 1, the (featherweight) GOAT status … all that stuff I said I would be getting,” Volkanovski said when his fight with Holloway was announced.
The Wollongong local is on the verge of cleaning out the featherweight division and has defeated some of the greats, including his two wins against Holloway, ‘The Korean Zombie’ Chan Sung Jung, Brian Ortega and Jose Aldo.
Volkanovski is on a 22-fight win streak with a 24-1 record and should he again defeat Holloway, a move up to the lightweight division looks on the cards for the 33-year-old.
UFC boss Dana White recently told the media that he would gladly give Volkanovski a fight against Charles Oliveira – who will get first opportunity at the lightweight title stripped from him after failing to make weight before defeating Justin Gaethje at UFC 274.
“If I put Max away, everyone will want me to go straight to that lightweight title,” Volkanovski recently told the media.
“They’re the conversations people are having now, including the head honcho.”
For now, Volkanovski is focusing on his upcoming fight against Holloway as he looks to continue his domination of the featherweight division.
