SailGP kicks off in Sydney this weekend, but if you’ve ever considered getting behind the event heralded as the Formula 1 of the ocean, perhaps its the Drive To Survive-esque docu-series that will convince you.

Racing On The Edge is to the SailGP what Drive to Survive is to F1, and with three seasons to binge right now and an Australian captain making headlines for his appearance, there has never been a better time to schedule a watch party.

What is SailGP: Racing On The Edge?

SailGP: Racing On The Edge is a three-season docu-series following the racing, rivalries and drama of the SailGP circuit. While there are nine teams in the competition — Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Spain, Canada and the USA — the Aussies and their captain Tom Slingsby make for the most interesting watch.

The Australian team remain undefeated champions since the competition’s inception in 2019, and hope to continue that streak this year. But with a prestigious title and $1 million prize pool on the line, tensions run high and personalities clash in this exhilarating series.

Why is SailGP: Racing On The Edge making headlines ahead of the 2023 SailGP?

Despite being in its third season, we havent heard much about Racing On The Edge until now. But that all changed this week when 38-year-old Tom Slingsby made headlines when it was revealed he really does swear like a sailor.

In the clip, which aired this week but was filmed back in September, Slingsby is heard swearing so many times his crew lost count after an aggressive move from New Zealand blocked the team’s wind and ultimately forced their boat to lose control and sink.

“I’ve probably given a few hundred dollars to the swear jar. I’ve had a few blow ups on the water,” said Slingsby in the series.

“I wish I’d think about the swear jar when I am having a bit of a tantrum and it might slow me down from swearing. But I don’t think it even comes into my thought process.

“I sometimes vent a little when I’m out there but I try to get on with the job. As soon as the vent is over, everyone is quick to tell me how much money I owe the swear jar.

“It would be a lot nicer if everyone in the team had to put money in because some of the people swear more than I do. But I seem to be the one who’s always mic’d up. So I get in trouble for it.”
