Drive to Survive meets Full Swing in a Netflix cross-over like never before

Netflix is going live.

The streaming giant is combining its two most successful sports docu-series to create their first ever live event, the inaugural Netflix Cup.

As the major streaming platforms continue to battle for superiority (and subscriptions!), they’re now venturing into the live sports market. So interesting ideas such as the Netflix Cup might be the solution.

Bringing in the top tier talent from both Drive to Survive and Full Swing, four athletes from both shows will compete in a match play golf tournament — much similar to the entertaining celebrity golf events we’ve seen between top golfers and other pro athletes on The Match.

Set to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada, Netflix will most likely partner a Formula 1 driver with a professional golfer as they “swing to survive” — Netflix’s apparent slogan for the event, a combination between the two shows’ titles.

Obviously this will be shown exclusively on Netflix, however there’s no clarification yet as to whether you can watch it on-demand as well.

With this match play golf tournament fast approaching, here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming Netflix Cup.

Who will be playing in the Netflix Cup?

4x Formula 1 drivers and 4x PGA Tour golfers

Netflix has announced a star-studded lineup for its inaugural Netflix Cup event with four athletes from each hit docu-series – Drive To Survive and Full Swing – set to take part.

Formula 1 Drivers:

Alex Albon (Williams Racing), Carlos Sainz (Scuderia Ferrari), Lando Norris (McLaren Racing) and Pierre Gasly (BWT Alpine F1 Team)

PGA Tour Golfers:

Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas, Max Homa and Rickie Fowler

When and where is the Netflix Cup?

November 14 – Wynn Golf Club, Las Vegas – 9:00am AEDT

As the year winds to an end, that doesn’t mean entertaining sporting events stop, with the Netflix Cup scheduled for mid-November.

It’s set to be hosted at Las Vegas’s Wynn Golf Club, where earlier this year Kansas City Chiefs duo Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce took on NBA sharp shooters from the Golden State Warriors Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, in a similar celebrity golf event.

The timing for the Netflix Cup lines up perfectly with the Formula 1’s Las Vegas Grand Prix, which is just days later.

What are the rules of the Netflix Cup?

Basically the premise is to have four F1 drivers step into the realm of golf, to partner with some of the PGA Tour’s best.

The tournament will include four pairs; each with an F1 driver and PGA player.

Each team will play eight holes; the top two teams with the lowest score advance to the final hole for a shot at winning the inaugural competition.

It’s unclear what other rules will be involved, but if it’s anything like The Match, it will be a four-ball game — everyone hits their own golf ball and the lowest score on each team is the teams score.

Are there any future Netflix Cups?

Netflix will closely monitor how well this first Netflix Cup performs before confirming any future events. However, there would be room for it to expand if it is a hit.

Assuming this gain enough attention, Netflix could explore the possibility of involving its other docu-series such as Break Point, Tour de France: Unchained and Quarterback.

So who knows. Maybe we could see some of Australia’s top sporting talents such as Nick Kyrgios and Cam Smith in future events.
