Foxtel’s sports streaming service Kayo has been getting more expensive since its inception in 2018. But more are discovering a loophole, which can help sports fans save money. So, is it legit?
Reports of a Kayo ‘loophole’ first surfaced in early 2023, with some AFL clubs providing digital memberships that came with a 12-month free subscription that practically shaved around 40% off the normal price for the service, plus any additional perks from the club’s membership itself.
Many may have heard the rumours of this being an option, but perhaps never really delved into whether it was a myth or reality — well we can assure you, it’s 100% legit!
It seems this loophole has become a deliberate act from Kayo now to get more users on its platform, with nearly every AFL team offering a digital pass membership in 2024. Usually an annual subscription for the service starts at $420, but some digital club memberships are selling for as low as $250 — a discount of $170.
Some teams offer great additional perks with this Kayo loophole, such as entry into a certain number of home games for the club, discounts on merchandise and free access to reserve grade matches.
So whether you’re actually a supporter of the club, or just someone looking for a crafty bargain, here’s what each club is offering via the Kayo loophole.
What is the Kayo loophole?
It’s pretty self explanatory, but basically the Kayo loophole is a way of getting a 12-months free Kayo subscription for almost half the price of if you just bought it directly by purchasing a digital membership via an AFL club.
17 out of the 18 clubs offer a digital pass, which costs roughly between $250-270 AUD, and allows you to not only watch your favourite team play weekly throughout the season, but also enjoy the ’50 other sports’ the streaming service offers.
What clubs offer cheaper Kayo and is it just through AFL memberships?
Every AFL club besides the Sydney Swans, No NRL teams
Throughout the 18 clubs in the AFL competition, only the Sydney Swans do not offer a digital pass membership which gives you access to Kayo for a year. The remaining 17 clubs all have the option to be a sofa-supporter for similar prices.
Unfortunately for NRL fans, there are no memberships that exploit the Kayo loophole, meaning if you are still on the hunt for a bargain, you might have to purchase an AFL membership that offers it.
