Happy Gilmore 2, film

Happy Gilmore 2 is reportedly a matter of when not if. Here’s what we know about the hugely exciting and potentially iconic sequel.

One of sport’s greatest ever films, Happy Gilmore, is getting a sequel, according to one of the film’s original stars.

Much about the film remains shrouded in mystery, though at the very least we know a first draft of the script is very real. We’ve tried our best to scrape together the few existing details about the Happy Gilmore sequel.

Here’s everything we know so far about the film.

Happy Gilmore 2: Everything we know

Is it actually happening?

According to Christopher McDonald, who portrayed Shooter McGavin, the original film’s antagonist, the film appears very much on the cards.

Speaking on a Cleveland radio show, McDonald, revealed he’d already seen a first draft of the film’s script.

“I saw Adam [Sandler] about two weeks ago and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re going to love this.’ I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that’ and he shows me the first draft of ‘Happy Gilmore 2,'” McDonald said.

For what it’s worth, there has been no recent word from Sandler, who co-wrote and starred in the original film, regarding Happy Gilmore 2. However, speaking on the Dan Patrick radio show in 2021, Sandler did not rule out the film which, three years later, looks likely to see the light of day.

When will Happy Gilmore 2 be released?

Unknown.

There’s been no official word on a release date. With the first draft of the script only being shown to one of the film’s stars fairly recently, it appears likely Happy Gilmore 2 won’t hit screens for some time now.

What will the film be about?

Again, we’re not sure.

However, if Sandler’s comments in 2021 are anything to go off, it appears likely the Happy Gilmore sequel could centre around Shooter McGavin, played by McDonald, and Gilmore, played by Sandler, re-igniting their rivalry on a senior golf tour.

We do know one of the film’s tournaments is expected to occur at the iconic Pebble Beach golf course, which hosts its own PGA Tour event.

Will it be released on Netflix?

More than likely, yes.

Since 2015, Adam Sandler and the streaming giant have been in the filmmaking business together. During this time, Sandler has made films such as Hustle and Uncut Gems, two of his most popular non-comedic films.

In 2020, it was announced Netflix and Sandler had renewed their deal for four additional movies. This followed the release of the comedy, Murder Mystery. The latest film produced as part of the deal, You Are So Not Invited to My Bar Mitzvah, was released in 2023, leading many to believe Happy Gilmore 2 will be the next film in the deal.

Why is Happy Gilmore so iconic?

There are countless iconic lines and scenes that have long remained in the consciousness and wheelhouse of the original film’s fans.

Adam Sandler sequels

One glaring fact about many of Sandler’s classic films, including Happy Gilmore, is no sequel.

Happy Gilmore 2 will be just his fourth.

The only films that have been turned into a follow-up production are Grown Ups, Hotel Transylvania and and Murder Mystery.
