Coming from a refugee family in Athens, Greece, he’s become one of the greatest basketball players of all-time. And now his story is being told the right way.
Amazon Prime Video are releasing a brand new documentary on Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, called ‘Giannis: The Marvelous Journey’, detailing his incredible story of winding up in the NBA from the most unlikely of areas.
Produced by Antetokounmpo’s ‘Improbable Media‘, the feature-length documentary details his upbringing in Greece, his start in the game of basketball and the NBA, and also the unbelievable career he’s had up until the 2023-24 season.
Through personal interviews from Giannis himself, his brothers (who also play in the NBA), and other members of his family, basketball fans get an inside look at the two-time MVPs’ life and the rollercoaster of a journey it has been.
Excitingly for Giannis, it’s the first production that his company has produced, which was co-founded by ESPN analyst and former NBA player Jay Williams.

What is the Giannis documentary about?
So far all we can go off is the trailer for the documentary, and what it shows us from that two and a half minute clip.
It clearly is going to show the entire progression of his life, from a refugee family growing up in Athens, to now a member to one of the most exclusive clubs in the NBA — the NBA 75th Anniversary team.
If you don’t know the story of Giannis Antetokounmpo then here is a quick rundown of where he’s come from, to what he’s achieved, to where he is now.
Giannis was born in Athens, Greece to Nigerian refugee parents who raised him and his three other brothers in the Greek capital. His relation with his brothers Thanasis, Kostas and Alex, is incredible strong and something he talks about in this documentary through tears.
After playing for professional Greek team Filathlitikos for two years, he was drafted 15th overall in the 2013 draft to the Milwaukee Bucks, who he has now been playing with for, for 11 seasons with.
There’s not much he hasn’t achieved in the game either, winning two-MVPs, a championship in 2021, a Finals MVP, eight All-Star appearances, a Most Improved award, a Defensive Player of the Year award, an All-Star MVP, and was honoured by being selected in the NBA 75th anniversary team.
But according to Antetokounmpo at the start of the trailer, he doesn’t understand why people think he’s one of the best in the league.
“People might say I’m one of the best players in the NBA right now. But I don’t see it, I don’t feel it,” Antetokoumnpo says.
“I’m just a hard worker, that’s trying to survive, because I’m scared of losing all (of) this.”
Although there have been some incredible highs in his illustrious career, there have also been some crushing lows. None harder then when his father Charles Antetokounmpo passed away and left the entire family shattered.
It was a moment where even Giannis’s family members thought Giannis was going to step away from the game forever — this moment will be covered according to the trailer.
We can expect this documentary to be an absolute rollercoaster with one of the most incredible story currently in the NBA from a believer in Athens to the king of the NBA.
