If you’ve somehow managed to run out of 2023 sporting docu-series already, you’re in luck because another is about to drop next week. This time, it’s Dawn of the Dolphins, a three-part series following the formation of the Dolphins as they prepare to enter their first NRL season.
The series, which will air exclusively on Stan, gives fly-on-the-wall access to the club on its journey from a community club to a professional NRL team.
“Dawn of the Dolphins is a uniquely compelling look at the sacrifice and determination required to launch a top tier sporting club. Having access to the inner sanctum of the greatest NRL coach of all time in Wayne Bennett is a distinct privilege, and we look forward to sharing the fascinating story of this proud club,” Cailah Scobie, chief content officer at Stan said of the docu-series.
When does Dawn of the Dolphins premiere?
Dawn of the Dolphins will premiere on Monday, March 6, with new episodes dropping weekly.
You can watch the three-part series, Dawn of the Dolphins, exclusively on Stan.
Is there a trailer for Dawn of the Dolphins?
You can watch the trailer for Dawn of the Dolphins below while you wait for the full series to drop.
Who is involved in the series?
The series features coach Wayne Bennett, who has previously coached the Raiders, Broncos (twice), Dragons, Knights and Rabbitohs and has won a whopping 7 premierships from 10 Grand Final appearances.
In addition to Bennett, the series will also include Dolphins CEO Terry Reader and talent spotter Peter O’Sullivan, as well as the players themselves.
What does Dawn of the Dolphins cover?
The series covers the trials and tribulations of launching a professional NRL team — following the story from securing the bid to enter the league, right up until the kick off of their inaugural season.
“It has been a pleasure to partner with Stan and launch the Dolphins to a national audience and really help tell the story of the origin of our club, and the journey to be ready within a time frame of 15 months to play in the NRL,” Dolphins CEO Terry Reader said.
“Giving the audience a behind-the-scenes look into our dressing room, meetings and training sessions, will showcase the hard work that many passionate people put in behind the scenes to launch an NRL club. We can’t wait to get our season underway, and for viewers to welcome us into their homes and hopefully create new fans and members of the Dolphins.”
Considering we haven’t had a team join the NRL since the Gold Coast Titans in 2007, the docu-series will give us our first real look at what goes on behind the scenes in making this actually happen.
When does the NRL season start?
Round 1 of the NRL season happens in the days leading up to the docco release; Thursday March 2 is when the action officially kicks off, when the Parramatta Eels host the Melbourne Storm.
The Dolphins’ maiden game is Sunday the 5th of March against the Sydney Roosters; a really stiff test for a side that hasn’t had a lot of time to build this all together. The game is at the home of rugby league, Suncorp Stadium, with kickoff at 4:05pm AEDT.
The club’s first fixture at home ground Kayo Stadium – otherwise known as Dolphin Stadium and Moreton Daily Stadium – is the following weekend; Round 2, hosting the Canberra Raiders on Saturday evening.
